Which Secret Lairs Actually Made Money? We Tracked All of Them.

The $50 Question Every Commander Player Asks

Every Secret Lair drop triggers the same Reddit thread: "When should I buy this secondhand?" The answers are always vibes — "wait for the delivery dip," "buy immediately if it has good IP," "most SLs are traps." Nobody has data. Until now.

SpellBook Finance now tracks every Secret Lair as a financial asset — with real price history, delivery date annotations, and dip alerts. Add SLs to your portfolio, see how they've performed against the S&P 500, and get copilot analysis on whether to buy, hold, or sell.

The Delivery Dip Is Real — But Not Universal

The MTG finance community talks about the "delivery dip" like it's a law of physics. And for about 30% of Secret Lairs, it is: price climbs during the wait period, drops when deliveries flood the market, then recovers over months. Jaws went from $40 to $120. Dandan hit $200+ on eBay within hours of selling out.

But here's what the data shows about the other 70%: most Secret Lairs trade at or below their original sale price on the secondary market. The "buy every SL and flip after delivery" strategy would have lost money. The winners are concentrated in a few categories:

  • Pop culture IP (Stranger Things, TMNT, Jurassic World) — scarcity + crossover demand
  • Reserved List adjacency — SL printings of cards that interact with RL staples
  • Genuine limited runs — drops that sell out in hours, not days

How to Use the Lifecycle Chart

Every Secret Lair price chart now shows a vertical line marking when deliveries started. This is the moment supply hits the secondary market. What happens next tells you everything:

  • Price drops 20%+ then recovers within 4 weeks — classic delivery dip. This SL has real demand. The dip was a buying window.
  • Price drops and stays down — the pre-delivery price was hype, not demand. The market found its real level.
  • Price barely moves at delivery — either the SL was underpriced at release, or demand was never speculative to begin with.

The chart doesn't tell you which pattern to expect before delivery — but it shows you exactly which pattern is playing out in real time.

Ask the Copilot

Open SpellBook's copilot and ask about any Secret Lair. It knows the current market price, the delivery timing, and how the price has moved relative to delivery. Ask "should I buy Secret Lair: Jaws right now?" and you'll get a verdict backed by actual price data — not a Reddit comment from six months ago.

Track Your SL Collection

Add your Secret Lairs to your portfolio alongside your cards and boxes. See your total sealed investment including SLs, compare against the S&P 500, and know which of your SL purchases were winners and which were expensive art projects.
