The Thesis
If you already buy sealed and singles, you deserve to know the math.
Most MTG players have opinions about which boxes are a good buy. Very few have numbers. The average tool ignores sealed product, relies on listing medians that never actually sold, or skips portfolio tracking entirely.
SpellBook Finance was built to close that gap. Every decision on this site, which box to crack, which single to hold, whether your collection is beating the market, is answered with data pulled from real transactions.
Built by one person
Sean Reimer
Founder, SpellBook Finance
I built SpellBook Finance because I wanted to know whether my MTG collection was actually beating the S&P 500. Every existing tool either ignored sealed product, used broken pricing data, or had no portfolio features. So I built the one I wanted.
I write every piece of analysis on this site, design every tool, and run every data pipeline myself. If you want to challenge a calculation, question the methodology, or just talk MTG finance, my inbox is open: sean@spellbook-finance.com
Methodology
Every number comes from somewhere specific.
No listing medians. No interpolation. No vibes. Here is every data source powering the metrics on this site.

TCGPlayer Market
Transaction-weighted from completed US sales, not listing medians.
Cross-market comp
17 sources
eBay, CardKingdom, CSI, Manapool, Cardmarket, plus 12 more aggregated feeds.
Sealed EV
MTGJSON sheets
Probability-weighted pull rates from booster composition data, not naive rarity averages.
Benchmark
Alpha Vantage
S&P 500 index data, time-aligned to your buy dates for like-for-like comparison.
Box prices
TCGCSV direct
Pulled straight from TCGPlayer vendor feeds, not scraped from listing pages.

What we believe
Four principles, no exceptions.
01
Only real sales count.
Listings stay up forever. Sold prices tell the truth. Every price on SpellBook is weighted toward what cards actually traded for, not what sellers wish they were worth.
02
Sealed is a financial asset.
Boxes are products with an expected value and a carrying cost, just like any other holding. We track them the same way we track singles: cost basis, current value, gain, loss.
03
Always compare to the market.
A Magic collection is either an investment or it isn't. SpellBook overlays your portfolio returns against the S&P 500 so the answer is obvious, not rhetorical.
04
Transparency is non-negotiable.
Every calculation on the site has a public methodology. If you disagree with the math, the math is open for review.
How SpellBook makes money
We are an analytics platform, not a retailer.
SpellBook Finance does not sell Magic cards or sealed product. We are an independent analytics and portfolio tracking platform. Every number on this site is calculated from public market data.
Revenue comes from two sources:
- Premium subscriptions ($5/mo, $40/yr) unlock the AI Copilot, arbitrage alerts, and Market Pulse briefs.
- Affiliate commissions. When you click a Buy link and complete a purchase on a partner marketplace, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Our affiliate partners: TCGplayer (via Impact), eBay Partner Network, and Manapool (via Tapfiliate).
Affiliate revenue does not influence our rankings, ratings, or recommendations. EV Rankings, price movers, and every other tool show whatever the math shows, regardless of which marketplace carries the product.
